Coach Maureen Brown enters her 7th season with the highly successful Lady Cougar program. She played two years for Kalamazoo Valley back in 2001-2003. During her freshman year, she was part of one of the most successful teams in Cougar history, posting a sparkling 31-4 overall record, an undefeated conference championship and placing 4th at the NJCAA National tournament after losing in the national semi-finals. Maureen built her leadership experience in her sophomore year, being the lone returning sophomore with 13 freshmen. Her efforts were rewarded the following year as in 2003-04 those freshmen would win 29 straight games and duplicate the 2001-02 efforts. After deciding not to play at a four year school after completing her work at Valley, she started her competitive coaching career at Hackett Catholic Central as freshman girl’s basketball coach. Focusing on fundamentals and having fun, Coach Brown’s freshman group posted great records and even greater attitudes. During the Fall of 2005, Coach “Mo” became the Varsity Assistant at Hackett, and also started her coaching career at Kalamazoo Valley as a Volunteer Assistant Coach. Her first year at KVCC, she helped Coach Gillette with the perimeters and handled statistics. Also that year, the Lady Cougars posted a 26-8 overall record and placed 5th at Nationals. For the 2008-09 season, Coach Brown was promoted to Assistant Coach and also named as the post coach. During Coach Brown’s tenure at Valley, the team has posted a 132-53 record and has won three Region XII, District “G” titles, won or shared four Western conference crowns and made three trips to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. Also during her time at Valley, Maureen has assisted in the development of 17 All Conference players, including 2011 MCCAA Western Conference Player of the Year Katie Vincke. Coach Brown loves coaching all ages and brings an undeniable passion for the game every time she steps into the gym. After being a ‘Cougar Cager’ as a youngster and attending many of the Lady Cougar camps, she worked several years of the popular camp. In 2010 Brown stepped into the Assistant Director position with the camp when we lost longtime coach Terry Gillette to cancer. She also works as a camp counselor in the Cougar camps for boys ages 11-17. Coach Brown has been happily married for 7 years, to former Cougar baseball player and current Hackett Catholic Central varsity baseball coach, Jesse Brown. She is a ‘stay at home’ Mom for their two children, JJ (6) and Jacqueline (2). They reside in Kalamazoo.
