02/25/2012 1:00 | Lansing CC Location: Away | Last year when the Kalamazoo Valley women's team traveled to Lansing in 1st place in the conference Denay Kelley broke their hearts with a game winning lay up as the clock expired and the Cougars ended up having to share the league title. But not THIS year! The Cougar post combo of Megan Holland(21 points, 17 rebounds) and Kendra Cook(19 points, 6 rebounds) combined for 40 points and the Cougar bench, led by freshmen Molly Sleeman(7 points, 6 assists), Jackie Devereaux (6 points, 6 rebounds) and Roni Hayden(6 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists)and sophomore Morgan Gropp(6 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists)outscored the Stars bench 27-6 as the Cougars exploded for 45 2nd half points while holding Lansing to 28 for the 23 point win. "Really nice team win for our kids." commented coach Welch. "There was some concern at halftime (Valley had a slim 31-25 lead at the half) because I didn't think we had played very well, but they pulled it together and performed at a very high level in the 2nd half. This seems to be a tough place for us to play - but not today. Good win on the road for us and it sets up a Western Conference 'showdown' for the conference crown on Wednesday at our place against LMC. I like our chances!" KVCC 76, Lansing 53 |
02/29/2012 5:30 | Lake Michigan College Location: Home | In what turned out to be the Western Conference Championship game, the Lady Cougars of Kalamazoo Valley prevailed over the visiting Indians of Lake Michigan by a score of 84-72, earning their 8th Conference crown in the last 12 years, and first out right crown since the 05-06 season. There was no question that the Cougs were ready for this one on sophomore night, but the adrenalin at the beginning of the game create a slow start for both teams. The KVCC girls came out of it the quickest and took a 13 point lead into halftime, 38-25 with Jen Lofts exploding for 13 points and Kendra Cook adding 10 points before the break. Predictably, LMC made a strong run to get back into the ball game, but The Valley ladies weathered the storm and re-built the lead to 17 with 1:19 left behind a 15 point second half from Cook, who ended the contest with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Megan Holland got into the act in the second scoring 9 of her 13 points and Jen Lofts added eight to finish the game with 21. Holland also added 10 big rebounds as the Cougars out rebounded the Indians 55-42. Brittany Cochran tossed in three triples and added a couple free throws to add 11 points to the scoring total and Molly Sleeman handed out 10 assists as the local team shared the ball to the tune of 26 assists on the night. As a result of the big win, the Ladies will host the MCCAA Association Championship (previously called the 'State' championship) on Saturday, the 3rd at 3:00 pm against the champions of the Eastern Conference, Macomb CC. KVCC 84, Lake Michigan 72 |
03/03/2012 3:00 | MCCAA Championship vs Macomb CC Location: Kalamazoo Valley | The Western Conference Champion Kalamazoo Valley Lady Cougars went head to head with Eastern Conference Champions Macomb CC on Saturday at Cougar Arena in search of another championship, and a lay in with 12.4 seconds left gave them what they were looking for - a hard fought 61-59 win! In a game where the home-standing Cougars found themselves in a deep hole late in the second half, with only the heroics of Jen Lofts prevented the visitors from taking a double digit lead into halftime. The Cougars trailed by 11 until Lofts nailed a pair of three pointers in the last 1:05 to cut the halftime lead to 34-29 and the Cougs were back in the game. The Valley team tightened up the defense in the 2nd half holding Macomb to 25 2nd half points and went to their strengths on offense as both Cook (15 points, 9 rebounds) and Megan Holland (9 points, 13 rebounds) scored 9 points in the half to put their team in a position to win at the end. All nine of Holland's points came in the 2nd stanza. Cook's final basket, on a pass from freshman Molly Sleeman, wasn't the end of the drama as Macomb got the ball to half court and called timeout with 10.4 seconds left to draw up a play. After the timeout the Monarchs found a wide open Carter, who had made a three to tie the game at 59 with 40.9 seconds left, in the corner. Cook came out of nowhere to block the 3 point shot and Sleeman secured the rebound with 2.7 seconds left and the game was in hand. The win gave Kalamazoo Valley it's third MCCAA 'State' Championship and 1st since 2004. The Cougars were runners-up in 2009. "It's been a pretty special week for this basketball team." Said a happy Coach Welch. "Winning a Western Conference championship on Wednesday against a VERY good Lake Michigan team and then getting a really tough win today against an excellent Macomb team is something that doesn't happen very often. I'm really proud of this team and coaching staff. They've had a great year (28-1), but there's more work to do. Next week's a big week, too." KVCC 61, Macomb 59 |
03/09/2012 8:00 pm | Region XII District Location: Ancilla College | The Lady Cougars spectacular season came to a premature end in the Regional Semi-final game against old conference foe Muskegon CC. Unable to find their shooting touch for much of the game, they shot just 29% for the game (23% in the critical 2nd half) and dropped a low scoring 59-50 game to the Jayhawks. Kendra Cook led the Cougars with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Valley ends the season with a 28-2 record and ranked #3 in the final NJCAA Division II poll. KVCC 50, Muskegon 59 |
