Steve Scott

Stats:

Bio: 4th year Kalamazoo Central High School Steve began his tennis career by playing in the 10 year old age group and advancing to the High School age Junior Circuit for the most outstanding young competitive tennis players in the Midwest. While Steve enjoyed all sports, he found that tennis best satisfied his competitive athletic needs. While Steve never competed in the Nationals in Kalamazoo, it also was a fact that with the National Boy's 18 & 16 Tournament being held in Kalamazoo, Steve’s overall tennis experience was enhanced by providing him the satisfaction of ball running when he was a youth to giving back his knowledge of the game by umpiring when he became an adult. Coach Van Zandt first became acquainted with Steve when Steve played on Coach Van Zandt’s Kalamazoo Inter-City league team in the late 1960's. They became re-acquainted in the 2003 KVCC Community College Fall season when Steve’s oldest daughter, Stephanie, joined the Cougar Women's tennis team. With Steve's fine tennis background, he became Coach Van Zandt's Assistant Coach for the next two years. His daughter proved to be one of the finest players in KVCC Women's tennis history by winning the State and Regional Singles and Doubles Championship as well as defeating a seeded player in the NJCAA National Championship. In 2005 a job re-location took Steve away from Michigan. However, in 2009 Steve found his way back to Michigan and Steve, without missing a beat, again became Coach Van Zandt's assistant and played an integral part in helping the 2010 Women's team find success in the NJCAA National Tournament. Steve's favorite tennis player is Jimmy Connors, mainly because both are exceptional left handed players (Steve's words). Steve's outside interests include being a past President of Kiwanis. He has also been a Board Member of the Disability Resource Center with an area of expertise being a Wheel Chair Specialist. Besides tennis, Steve really enjoys hunting, fishing, and playing golf. Even with those interests, he puts his family as most important. That includes his two beautiful daughters and his "perfect" granddaughter, Gabby, who he will pick up and travel to his friends homes just to "show her off"! On one occasion he even packed up Gabby and went on a tennis scouting sojourn to the MHSAA State Girl's Tournament in East Lansing. That's DEDICATION! Even with this "full plate" Steve is BIG in believing and practicing volunteerism. This is verified by Steve being a recipient of the annual Kalamazoo Gazette Star Award!
