2011 Dale B. Lake Presidential Award Recipients
Kathryn Christopher & Caleb Licavoli
Kalamazoo Valley Community College
The 2011 recipients of the prestigious Dale B. Lake Presidential Award have been named. This award is a yearly selection process that honors KVCC's founding President, Dale B. Lake, by giving annual recognition to outstanding student-athletes at KVCC. Exceptional academic achievement, outstanding athletic contribution, and evidence of uncommon leadership and character are among the criteria for this award. Coaches nominate, then vote, to determine the winners.
This year the lady recipient is Kathryn Christopher. The male recipient is Caleb Licavoli.
Kathryn is a 2009 graduate of Portage Central High School. She has achieved a 3.88 grade point average while passing 66 credit hours in four semesters at KVCC. She plans to continue her education and continue playing intercollegiate softball at Grand Valley State University in the fall.
Kathryn is the daughter of Patti and Bernie Christopher. She has overcome several injuries during her conversion as a high school catcher to college first baseman for the Cougars. Katie was named Second Team All Conference this past season, finishing the season on the 38-6 nationally ranked Cougar squad, with an impressive .325 batting average. Coach Clark remarked, "KC was a leader on and off the field. She mostly led by example, but would also be vocal when she needed to be. In the Learning Center she was like a team tutor to her teammates that needed help."
Kathryn also earned MCCAA Academic All Conference and Academic All State recognition, and her plaudits keep coming as she recently received the NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement.
The male recipient, Caleb Licavoli, is a graduate Caro High School in Caro, MI. He walked-on and earned a scholarship at KVCC in baseball. He sports a 3.75 GPA with 54 completed hours in four semesters at KVCC. He is a two year starter on the baseball team, and he is a Criminal Justice major.
Caleb is the son of Julie and Frank Licavoli. Caleb has been a mentor and teacher-aide in the Law Enforcement program at KVCC. Caleb was able to work thirty hours a week while attending classes and playing baseball for KVCC.
Coach Vallier commented on Caleb: "He has demonstrated great character and outstanding leadership during his tenure in the baseball program."
"The Dale B. Lake award is a fitting, year-ending highlight of our program. These two young people cap another great year for Cougar Athletics. Kathryn and Caleb exemplify all that is good in college athletics. We join with friends and family in congratulating them and wishing them continued successes," praised retiring Athletic Director Dick Shilts.
Each recipient will be presented with a plaque signifying this honor, and their names will be engraved on a large plaque recording the names of previous winners. The plaque is currently on display in the KVCC athletic office.
