The 2006 recipients of the prestigious Dale B. Lake Presidential Award have been named.  This award is a yearly endeavor that honors KVCC's founding President, Dale B. Lake, by giving annual recognition to outstanding student-athletes at KVCC.  Exceptional academic achievement, outstanding athletic contribution, and evidence of uncommon leadership and character are among the criteria for this award.

This year the lady recipient is Chelsea Acker.  The male recipient is Bruce Wall.

Chelsea was an All League performer in both basketball and soccer during her undergraduate years at Linden High School near Fenton, Michigan.  Her outstanding academic work in high school and her impressive ACT score and GPA enabled her to be selected as a member of the KVCC Honors Program.  Her accumulative GPA at KVCC was a sparkling 3.87, a feat that has earned her Distinguished Academic All American status with the NJCAA, and also helped the women's basketball team achieve a 3.08 GPA, garnering them Academic All American Status as a team.  Chelsea has completed her two year participation in the KVCC women's basketball program.  She earned All Conference honors as a sophomore, and she was selected as a Co-Captain on last season's Regional Championship team.  Chelsea also found time to go twice a week to a local elementary school as a volunteer reader, and she participated regularly in the KVCC Fellowship of Christian Athletes huddle.

Coach Ron Welch comments that "Chelsea has shown strong leadership skills with our program, and her work ethic was responsible for her being one of the best defensive post players ever to play at KVCC."  Coach Welch continued by remarking, "We have had a lot of players receive this award, and I think Chelsea is one of the strongest candidates we have ever had."

Chelsea is a Liberal Arts major at KVCC, and is transferring to Grand Valley State University, where she is pursuing a degree in Business Administration.

Bruce Wall is the 2006 male recipient of the Dale B. Lake Award.  Bruce is a graduate of Comstock High School and has finished two years as a participant in the KVCC Baseball Program.  He is in a pre-med curriculum and has a 3.48 GPA with 51 hours passed.  During his freshman year, Bruce achieved a 4.0 GPA.  Bruce was selected to be Captain for the 2006 Cougar Baseball Team.  He hit .399, had 27 RBI's, scored 43 runs, and had just one error in his last 31 intercollegiate games.  His 61 hits in 153 at bats (.399) set a school record.  Bruce played in 90 games over his two year career, starting in 50 his sophomore season.  Bruce also found time to work at the Kalamazoo Country Club during the fall and spring seasons and he kept up a part-time job with various landscaping chores.  Also noteworthy is the fact that Bruce often attended school conferences, functions, games, and other special events of his four siblings.

Wall is transferring to Grand Valley State University where he will be a participant on their intercollegiate baseball team while pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Therapy.

Bruce helped KVCC's baseball team to achieve a 2.84 overall GPA.  Coach Bernie Vallier remarked, "We could do no better in a candidate for this award."

"These two fine student-athletes exemplify all that is good about athletic competition," remarked Athletic Director, Dick Shilts.  "Their quiet leadership has been an example for athletes everywhere.  And, their classroom achievements speak volumes about their discipline and effort.  KVCC couldn't be prouder of the accomplishments of Chelsea and Bruce."

Each recipient will be presented with a plaque signifying this honor, and their names will be engraved on a large plaque revealing the names of previous winners.  The plaque is  currently on display in the KVCC athletic office.
