The 2003 recipients of the prestigious Dale B. Lake Presidential Award have been named.  This award is a yearly endeavor that honors KVCC's founding President, Dale B. Lake, by giving annual recognition to outstanding student-athletes at KVCC.  Exceptional academic achievement, as well as outstanding athletic contribution, is given special consideration.  This year two ladies have been selected for this award.  They are Karie and Kacie Karasiak.  The male recipient is Francisco Gomez.

Karie and Kacie Karasiak graduated from Penn High School in Mishawaka, Indiana.  After achieving numerous high school academic and athletic honors, both student-athletes continued to excel in both volleyball and softball while at KVCC.  Karie sports a 3.90 GPA; twin sister Kacie has a 3.92 after four semesters at KVCC.  Both of them have received All Conference honors in Volleyball and All Conference Honorable Mention honors in Softball while at KVCC.  Karie and Kacie are both Liberal Arts Majors and participated in the KVCC Honors Program.  Karie also has received a Study Abroad Scholarship and will soon go to Ecuador to study.  Both ladies also received Academic All Conference, Academic All State, and Distinguished Academic All American honors during their tenure at KVCC.  They have signed scholarships to play softball at St. Xavier University near Chicago.

"These two fine student-athletes exemplify what's good about athletic competition," remarked Athletic Director, Dick Shilts.  "Their performance has been a role model for athletes everywhere.  Their classroom achievements speak volumes about their discipline and effort, but perhaps even more impressive has been their humble attitude about all of their successes.  KVCC couldn't be prouder of these two fine athletes."

Francisco Gomez transferred to KVCC from Jefferson College in Hillsboro, MO.  Although he only played one year for the Cougars, he earned MVP honors on this year's team.  He achieved the best competitive record on the team while playing at #1 singles and #1 doubles.  Not only his play, but also his exceptional leadership contributed significantly to KVCC's 12th place finish at the national tournament.  Francisco is a Liberal Arts Major and sports a 3.76 GPA.  He has signed a scholarship to play tennis for Ferris State University next year.

"Francisco made his mark quickly and effectively," remarked Athletic Director Dick Shilts.  "His tennis ability is surpassed only by his good sportsmanship on and off the courts.  He is another in a long line of outstanding student-athletes that have received this recognition.  We are all proud of him."
